Serious Sam 4 once again offers the tried-and-true formula of run-and-gun action with huge swarms of enemies and the usual assortment of weapons, being the pistol, shotgun, double shotgun, assault rifle, etc. However, the game retains the series’ standard style of humor, which can result in grating dialogue and character interactions that feel forced or out of place within the setting. While this could be a potential turn off for fans of the series, it does have a nice balance between story and gameplay to help the game move along. The characters you interact with are also given more of a backstory and personality than characters in other Serious Sam games, which helps build the world you’re a part of.
Story takes a much bigger focus in Serious Sam 4 than in other games in the series, featuring more in-depth cutscenes and dynamic storytelling. Along the way, you take on swarms of monstrous aliens and travel around the world on a mission to finish the battle. “Serious” Sam Stone and several colleagues (including a new recruit and several friends of Sam) are tasked with finding the Holy Grail and Ark of the Covenant, mystical alien artifacts rumored to reveal a way to take on Mental’s army. Set long before the events of Serious Sam 3: B.F.E., Serious Sam 4 begins with an invasion of aliens hellbent on taking over the world and led by a tyrant named Mental. Years later, Croteam returns to continue the Serious Sam legacy with another adventure that harkens back to the olden days of the first person shooter phenomenon… for better and for worse. Serious Sam catapulted itself into the spotlight and quickly became a cult classic, spawning a whole franchise of run-and-gun action. The first person shooter craze was beginning to kick into high gear, and developer Croteam came out of the gate with a brand new IP set to push the boundaries of what 3D video game engines at the time were capable of.

Alen Ladavac from Croteam issued the following statement on Steam: In The Talos Principle, pirates would always get stuck in an elevator, which made the game impossible to play. Just in case you don’t remember, Serious Sam 3 had a rather interesting form of DRM, which involved a giant invincible armoured scorpion that would hunt down players if they attempted to play a pirated copy of the game. As for the story, it appears that it will be set before the events of Serious Sam 3, so it should definitely prove interesting.Īnother thing worth pointing out is that the game will use some form of copy protection, maybe even something along the lines of the immortal scorpion that was implemented in Serious Sam 3. Sources indicate that the Serious Engine has received some impressive upgrades, which means that Serious Sam 4 will benefit from advanced features such as motion capture and photogrammetry. However, the developers have decided to share a few things regarding the game’s engine and main features in order to allow us to get a better idea of what to expect from the final product. We still don’t know much about Serious Sam 4, as Croteam has only just begun writing the game’s story towards the end of 2015.
